Papua Police foil fuel smuggling attempt to PNG

The Maritime and Air Police Directorate of Indonesia's Papua Regional Police thwarted an attempt to smuggle 26 jerry cans of fuel into Papua New Guinea early Saturday morning.

Speaking in Jayapura, Papua, on Monday, the Head of the Papua Police Public Relations Division, Grand Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito, announced that two alleged smugglers were arrested: a PNG citizen identified by the initials PT (20) and a Jayapura resident named CY (59).

The police apprehended the two individuals in the waters of Tanjung Kayu Batu in Jayapura. They seized the 26 jerry cans, each containing 35 liters of fuel, along with a motorbike.

"The motorcycle, found on a longboat, is likely to be a stolen unit," Sukarnito said.

He confirmed that both smugglers and the confiscated items have since been transferred to the Papua Regional Police headquarters for detailed investigation.
