US and China agree on joint steps over Russia's war against Ukraine – Bloomberg
The summit between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump was one of the most high-profile in recent years. It opened up the possibility for the first time of Beijing's real involvement in resolving the war in Ukraine, Chinese government adviser David Daokui Li says in a comment to Bloomberg.
According to Li, this meeting was historic because the United States effectively recognized China as an equal partner in the negotiations. He noted that one of the key topics of future serious negotiations will be the situation in Ukraine.
"Among all the meetings between the two leaders, this one is perhaps the most important — really historical. Fundamentally the most important progress for both sides is for the US to recognize China as equal partner to talk about things," Li said.
After the summit, Trump said that Washington and Beijing had agreed to "work together" to "get the war with Russia and Ukraine solved". Although the details of the agreements are not yet known, experts believe that China's participation could significantly influence the diplomatic context surrounding the war.
The meeting also ended with the announcement of a one-year trade truce and agreements on tariffs and export controls for critical minerals. However, according to analysts, the main intrigue is China's possible involvement in resolving security issues, particularly regarding Ukraine.
According to Li, there is noticeable enthusiasm in Beijing after the summit, and the publication of Xi Jinping's chief of staff, Cai Qi's article on proactive management of the international space, indicates China's growing confidence in its global role.
At the same time, the US is signaling its desire to reduce its dependence on China in strategic areas and continues to unite allies against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine.
Meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping
On the night of October 29-30, Kyiv time, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks in Busan, South Korea. The leaders announced that they had reached a consensus and confirmed their intention to continue dialogue on ways to resolve Russia's war in Ukraine.
The meeting was the first face-to-face conversation between Trump and Xi since 2019—the last time they met was during Trump's first presidential term. The talks lasted about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
